The University has established over 90 institutes, schools, and centres that perform specialized teaching and research functions. Most of these centres are located within individual faculties (see lists of departments and centres under each faculty), and were set up to link local scholars in the same field and to provide a convenient focus for research, teaching, publication, international scholarly exchange and collaboration. They tend to specialize in fields that reflect the particular strengths and interests of the faculties concerned. There are also around 35 independent units that engage in multi-disciplinary teaching and research that spans faculty boundaries. The work of some of these units is highlighted below.
