PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES
BSc(Surv) is an interdisciplinary academic programme fostering rigorous critical inquiry into the economic, financial, legal, and managerial aspects of real estate and construction. Teaching staff encourage students to think across the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines to develop creative academic approaches and solutions to real life issues and prepare students for careers in real estate, construction, banking, and finance.
Programme Structure
BSc(Surv) was the first fully integrated undergraduate surveying course world-wide and as such has led the way in terms of surveying education. It covers the full spectrum of real estate and construction business, including land and property development, construction management, real estate finance and investment, facility maintenance, and urban renewal. A significant difference between this and more conventional courses is the greater emphasis on a common academic underpinning and perspective required by all real estate and construction professionals.
The three-year programme requires a total of 150 credits in the core courses of land and construction economics, land and construction management, property and construction law, and construction technology, together with a further 30 credits selected from a number of electives.
Each year of the programme has two major components: the lecture course and surveying studio. The lecture course defines the academic core of the programme whilst the studio provides an environment where the interdisciplinary nature of the programme can be more fully explored and boundaries tested through an extensive use of case studies and student centered project work. Some studio cases may require students to take a field trip to the Mainland.
At the end of the second year of the programme, students are required to organise a study tour outside of Hong Kong to study the real estate and construction markets in different socio-economic environments. Students may also be given the opportunity to start to enhance their professional experience via the various internship and mentorship programmes organized through the Department.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
BSc(Surv) is recognised by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Graduates have complete flexibility to choose a surveying specialism from five HKIS divisions, namely General Practice Surveying, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Planning and Development, and Property and Facility Management, along with a broad range of RICS pathways.
