ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Selection Criteria

The Faculty of Arts' entrance requirements are the same as the University's minimum entrance requirements.

JUPAS candidates achieving better than a 'D' in Use of English and those taking Liberal Studies will be given extra credit. JUPAS applicants should place BA as their Band A choice since lower choices are not normally considered.

JUPAS applicants are primarily selected on the basis of good examination results at the HKALE and, to a lesser degree, the HKCEE. Reports by school principals are also referred to.

Non-JUPAS applicants who do not sit the HKALE are selected mainly on the basis of their individual qualifications and achievements. Applicants may be invited to an interview.

Music Specialist Scheme

Candidates with musical qualifications are invited to indicate them in the appropriate column on the application form. Candidates with musical qualifications of a high standard may receive a preferential offer of admission to study music under the 'Music Specialist Scheme'. This programme is aimed at students with high music abilities who may not have equally high academic results. They are required to major in Music.

PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme lasts three years. The first year is a 'year of exploration' in which students are encouraged to pursue their special interests and introduce themselves to subjects new to them. A wide range of choices is allowed, but students will be asked to take at least 18 credits from at least two different Arts programmes (corresponding to a major/minor) in the Faculty, together with courses in English and Chinese language enhancement, and two courses of Common Core Curriculum as induction to university education.

Such requirements are meant to ensure greater exposure and broadening within and outside the humanities, introduce students to lifelong learning processes, and enhance their communication skills.

At the end of the first year, students declare a 'major' field, which will take up about 45% of their work in the second and third years. In the second and third years of study, the BA programme offers a liberal and flexible Humanities curriculum which enables students to develop their individual study programme of 'majors' within a guided and academically coherent framework. Students can elect to pursue one 'major' plus a variety of other courses, two separate 'majors' (or a 'double major'), or one 'major' and up to two minors.

Students may choose to take one of their majors or up to two minors outside of Arts from the Faculties of Business and Economics, Science or Social Sciences or to take a combination of courses offered outside the Faculty without declaring a major or minor. The purpose is again to broaden the student's knowledge and perspective, but in areas other than the humanities.

CAREER PROSPECTS

While not a professional training course as such, the BA programme equips graduates with basic breadth of knowledge, plus analytical, linguistic and interpersonal skills increasingly required in the workplace. Arts graduates are in demand in both the private and public sectors, and thus have many career options. The largest percentage of Arts graduates join the business sector, including many who assume management and administrative posts. The next largest group become teachers. Some graduates have joined the government as administrative or executive officers, while others have found work in media and advertising. In recent years, more and more Arts students have continued their studies at the post-graduate level.

Graduates of the Faculty have established successful careers in both the public and private sectors: in management, finance, commerce, the media and journalism, government, administration, arts and culture, education, and law.

EXAMINATIONS/ASSESSMENTS

Examinations are normally held at the end of each semester, although a high proportion of our courses are now examined by 100% continuous coursework assessment, including students' performance in tutorials and seminars and/or written work presented during their courses.
