ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Candidates need to satisfy the University entrance requirements, which include Grade D in AS Use of English. There are no additional requirements for the programme but higher Use of English grades will be an advantage.

Non-JUPAS candidates may be asked to attend an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.

PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES

This double-degree programme is a four-year full-time programme, which is offered jointly by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education. It is an integrated programme offering both academic and professional studies. It incorporates a graduate teaching qualification and is regarded as the equivalent of a BA plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). This programme allows students to obtain two degrees in four years, and to meet the language requirements for English language teachers as recommended by the HKSAR Government's Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).

The double degree requires students to complete 240 credit units, with a Major in English Language and Linguistics and professional core courses with the Faculty of Education. Professional aspects of the double degree are phased in gradually over the four years with Pedagogy courses and Teaching Practice in Hong Kong secondary schools. The BA&BEd(LangEd) focuses on the teaching of English as a second language, as is the case in mainstream Hong Kong schools.

The curriculum covers the following areas: education foundations, methods and practices of teaching, information technology, linguistics, applied linguistics, literature and language proficiency.

In each of the four years of the curriculum, students will spend time in schools, initially observing and later teaching. Years 2 to 4 of the programme usually include a total of 19 weeks of teaching practice. Students normally travel overseas late in their second year to broaden their cultural and language experience.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates obtain a combined academic and professional qualification. Their thorough knowledge of English language as a subject, broad understanding of educational issues, and high level of classroom expertise make them ideally suited to teaching English at all levels in mainstream Hong Kong secondary schools, and for teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) in international schools. There is at present a high demand for fully qualified English Language teachers in Hong Kong and for ESL/EFL teachers around the world. BA&BEd(LangEd) graduates will be exempt from the Government's Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (English Language) (LPATE) but are required to pass the Faculty of Education's English proficiency tests before graduating. Graduates will also have access to employment opportunities in the broader field of education as well as the many fields in which BA graduates have been employed.

EXAMINATIONS/ASSESSMENTS

Students are assessed in a variety of ways, including assignments, written papers, written examinations, oral examinations and practical teaching. Students may also be assessed on their performance in tutorials and seminars and/or written work presented during their courses. Students also have to complete a dissertation during the final year of study on a topic related to English language or education.
