The Faculty of Education was established in 1984, but as a Department in the Faculty of Arts and then a School, it has been involved in teacher education since 1917. It is a major teacher education provider in Hong Kong. It adopted a unitary structure in September 2002. It has now seven divisions: (1) Chinese Language and Literature, (2) English Language Education, (3) Information and Technology Studies, (4) Learning, Development and Diversity, (5) Policy, Administration and Social Sciences Education, (6) Science, Mathematics and Computing, and (7) Speech and Hearing Sciences. It is also the host Faculty for the degree offered by the Institute of Human Performance. The Faculty offers opportunities for study in courses for the Doctor of Education, the Master of Education, the Master of Science in Audiology, the Master of Science in Information Technology in Education, the Master of Science in Library and Information Management, the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Educational Studies, the Postgraduate Diploma in Education, the Bachelor of Education in Language Education, the Bachelor of Education, the Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences, the Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Health, the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education in Language Education, and the Bachelor of Science in Information Management for sub-degree holders. The Faculty also offers MPhil and PhD research degrees and a wide range of in-service courses.

Recent decades have seen dramatic changes in educational opportunities in Hong Kong. What was once a highly selective and elitist educational system has developed into a system which provides comprehensive education for all school-age children. The Faculty has responded in a number of ways to the changing community needs generated by this expansion. It has contributed to the expansion of opportunities for professional training of graduate teachers and provided the preparation required for working in more specialist areas such as school administration, curriculum development, evaluation, counselling and guidance, information and technology, exercise and health industry, and speech and language therapy.
