The Faculty of Education in collaboration with other faculties in the university offers an inter-disciplinary four-year honours degree focusing on the study and teaching of Liberal Studies, a broadly-based core subject in the new senior secondary school curriculum.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
There are no additional requirements once the University entrance requirements are met.
PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES
The BEd curriculum extends over four academic years of full-time study and is an integrated programme containing both academic and professional studies. It incorporates a graduate teaching qualification and is regarded as the equivalent of a first degree plus the Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
The curriculum covers the following areas: education foundation, methods and practices of teaching, Liberal Studies in issues of society and culture, technology and environment, personal and interpersonal development, and relevant knowledge foundations in philosophy, psychology, politics, economics, ethics and research, as well as cross-faculty electives.
In each of the four years of the curriculum, students will spend time in schools observing and teaching.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Graduates from the programme can develop their careers as school teachers, curriculum officers, educational material writers, as well as training or research officers in business organizations, non-governmental organizations and universities.
EXAMINATIONS/ASSESSMENTS
Students are assessed in a variety of ways, including assignments, written papers, oral examinations and practical teaching. Students also have to complete a dissertation during the final year of study.
