This four-year honours degree has two fields of study: one focusing on the study and teaching of Chinese language in primary and junior secondary schools and the other on teaching English as a second language in primary schools. Although both fields of study have several common elements, each field of study is treated as an independent choice for the purpose of admission.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

In addition to satisfying the University entrance requirements, candidates for admission shall satisfy the following requirements:

(1)Primary and Junior Secondary Chinese (JUPAS Code: 6121): Grade D or above in AS Chinese Language and Culture, or Grade E or above in AL Chinese Literature;

(2)Primary English (JUPAS Code: 6133): No additional requirements.

PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES

The BEd(LangEd) curriculum extends over four academic years of full-time study and is an integrated programme containing both academic and professional studies. It incorporates a graduate teaching qualification and is regarded as the equivalent of a BA plus the Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

The curriculum covers the foundations of education, methods and practices of teaching, child development and language learning, linguistics, literature, and information and communication technologies in education.

In each of the four years of the curriculum, students will spend time in schools observing and teaching. Students normally travel outside Hong Kong in their second year to broaden their cultural and language experience.

CAREER PROSPECTS

School teaching is not the only career the BEd(LangEd) prepares students for. It can also lead to work in the government as a school inspector or curriculum development officer, in publishing as an editor or writer of textbooks, in adult education, in human resources training in large business companies, and in university teaching and research.

EXAMINATIONS/ASSESSMENTS

Students are assessed in a variety of ways, including assignments, written papers, oral examinations and practical teaching. Students also have to complete a dissertation/classroom-based research project during the final year of study.
