The Institute of Human Performance offers a three-year full-time honours degree of Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Health. This degree is designed to give students a multi-disciplinary programme of education in the exercise sciences and health, synthesising the biophysical, psycho-social and health aspects of exercise.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

There are no additional entrance requirements for admission to the BSc(Exercise&Health) programme.

PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES

The programme articulates fully with the undergraduate Major/Minor programme. All students who enrol in the BSc(Exercise&Health) will take a Major in Exercise Science. The Major consists of introductory and advanced level courses. Introductory courses are compulsory and introduce students to the components of the Exercise Sciences, anatomy and physiology and the role of physical activity in the maintenance of good physical health and avoidance of disease.

Year 2 includes a core element common to all students which covers advanced study of the biophysical, psycho-social and health aspects of exercise. Students are able to choose specialist elective courses, which are offered throughout Years 2 and 3. These courses offer much more project and research driven content, culminating in the final year dissertation.

Students who wish to take a Second Major or Minor must choose the appropriate courses. Those who do not wish to take a Second Major or Minor can instead enrol in additional Exercise Science electives and other inter-Faculty elective courses to complete the credit unit requirements.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The health and fitness industry continues to flourish throughout Asia, and there is an increasing demand for graduates with well developed skills in the Exercise Sciences. Graduates will be equipped to move into the health and fitness profession, sport institutes and industry, or proceed to higher degrees.

The BSc(Exercise&Health) degree is not a physical education teacher preparatory course. Graduates must complete an appropriate Postgraduate Diploma in Education with a major in physical education to become a physical education teacher.

EXAMINATIONS/ASSESSMENTS

Assessment is on a per-course basis and may take the form of portfolios, project and laboratory papers, research papers and posters, as well as more traditional assessment forms such as examination.
