The Faculty of Engineering, one of the founding faculties of The University of Hong Kong, was established in 1912. At this period Hong Kong had only a rudimentary industrial base. Since then, the Faculty has expanded to keep pace with global progress in technology, and to contribute to Hong Kong's dynamic industrial growth. Since its foundation the Faculty has produced at least 15,010 first-degree engineering graduates and 8,720 postgraduate research and taught masters graduates (as at end-2009). Many of its graduates hold senior and responsible positions in industry and commerce, education and the government.
As engineering is such a diversified field of human endeavour, it is divided into different disciplines for study purposes. The Faculty of Engineering is made up of five departments:
The five departments offer a wide range of programme specialisations (as detailed at the beginning of this chapter), leading to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering. In 2002-2003 the Faculty of Engineering introduced a new inter-disciplinary BEng in Medical Engineering programme jointly with the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine to exploit the strengths of both faculties. The duration of each programme of study is three years, with the exception of the two double-degree programmes. The Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Business and Economics jointly offer the double-degree programme of BBA (Information Systems)/BEng in Computer Science [BBA(IS)/BEng(CompSc)] with a study period of four years. In 2004-2005, the Faculty of Engineering launched jointly with the Faculty of Law a five-year double-degree programme in civil engineering and law leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Law) [BEng(CivE-Law)] and Bachelor of Laws [LLB]. In 2007-2008, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Business and Economics jointly offered the double-degree programme BEng/BBA. Students pursuing the double-degree BEng/BBA can finish the BEng degree in three years, and continue studying an additional year for the degree of BBA on self-financing basis. For details of admission to the above double-degree programmes, please refer to the following relevant sections [BEng(CivE-Law) and BEng/BBA] or the entrance requirements as set out by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
The Faculty aims to provide an integrated education to students, imparting not only the latest technical knowledge, but also positive and lateral thinking, versatility of approach, good communication and social skills, professional integrity, and other personal attributes.
