PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES
This programme is jointly offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Computer Science, and provides a balanced and integrated coverage in both computer hardware and software to prepare students to work in the fields of computer engineering, software and hardware system design and information technology.
The first and second years of the programme aim at giving students a solid foundation in the subject. In their final year, students may choose various subjects in the areas of hardware and digital technology, computer architecture and systems, system software and programming, and applications such as database systems, internet technology, and multimedia computing. They will also enrol in broadening courses ranging from foreign languages to finance and management. Together, these courses equip students with a very competitive mix of skills.
At the same time, students acquire practical skills in hardware and software systems from workshop training, industrial training, integrated project and final-year project. Students may also elect to spend a year in industry to follow an integrated study-work programme, an experience favoured by many companies big and small.
An attractive feature of the programme is that it is jointly offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. The two departments have a total of about 50 teaching staff members, a large number by any standard. The combined resources of the two departments are also impressive. They have many laboratories and teaching and research facilities, and have expertise in many different areas, including computer hardware and software, computer networks, electronics and VLSI, communications, and biomedical-engineering. Their students therefore enjoy a wide choice of courses, and the opportunity of shifting from one specialisation to another as they discover their real interest after joining our programme.
Subject to approval, students may opt to minor in Business, Economics or Finance.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
The BENG(CE) programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Graduates can, with proper training and working experience, obtain the status of Registered Professional Engineer. This professional status is recognised through the Washington Accord by the signatories of engineering organisations in the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
CAREER PROSPECTS
The curriculum prepares students for a range of career opportunities in computer hardware and software, computer networks, data communications, multimedia processing, and internet and information technology. It also provides students with the necessary foundation to pursue higher degree studies locally or overseas.
Employment prospects are good, since most firms and organizations around the world are computerised, they require technical staff to manage and develop their computer systems and networks. Graduates can expect to obtain jobs in government departments, service organisations such as banks and airlines, public utilities such as power companies and the MTR, commercial organisations, as well as the manufacturing sector.
