PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES

The Information Engineering programme aims at equipping students with fundamental knowledge and specialised practical skills for the information industries, such as internet, computer networking, software design, and communications. The Hong Kong SAR Government has recognised the importance of this field of knowledge for widening Hong Kong's economic base and improving its competitive advantage, and the government's encouragement of e-commerce has created many attractive opportunities for graduates from this programme.

Courses in Information Engineering are designed to provide a sound fundamental education in information processing, networking, telecommunications and related areas. At the same time, to complement the technical subjects, the curriculum also includes substantial components on business, management, and the structure and operation of the industrial organisations. This careful combination provides students with all-round skills that are welcome by the industries. During the first three semesters all students follow mostly the same core courses to cover the fundamental materials. In the following three semesters, students may take various breadth and depth courses and major in one or two key areas such as computer networking and IT applications, information processing, or in telecommunications.

An integrated study-work programme, where students elect to spend a year in industry at the end of the second year, is popular among students as it gives them the chance to practise their technical and business skills. Students also have ample opportunities throughout their course of studies for acquiring practical skills from workshop training, industrial training, integrated project and final-year technical project.

Subject to approval, students may opt to minor in Business, Economics or Finance.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

The BENG(InfoE) programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Graduates can, with proper training and working experience, obtain the status of Registered Professional Engineer. This professional status is recognised through the Washington Accord by the signatories of engineering organisations in the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The Information Engineering curriculum enables graduates to acquire a wide scope of up-to-date knowledge in information processing, Internet related technologies, telecommunications and signal processing. Graduates also learn business skills and understand the structure and operation of the IT industry. Graduates are in high demand by information processing/system operators, e-commerce companies, software companies and technology companies.
