PROGRAMME AIMS AND FEATURES
The programme is designed on the basis of an outcome-based approach to student learning which aims to produce graduates with solid knowledge of pharmacy as well as abilities to apply the core knowledge and skills for effective, humane and ethical delivery of pharmaceutical care. The distinctive elements include the following:
Strong emphasis on clinical pharmacy Clinical pharmacy is the current trend of training for pharmacists in developed countries. Students of the programme would enjoy early clinical exposure and benefit from the inter-professional collaboration of pharmacists and clinicians through teaching in the wards. With training in a clinical setting and clinical attachment, they will become more capable of active participation in drug treatment and providing expert services on safe, effective and rational use of drugs.
Community-based training The curriculum emphasizes community-based training to prepare graduates for the provision of expert service at the community level. Placement training in local pharmaceutical firms will be arranged.
Exposure to Chinese as well as complementary and alternative medicine It is important for the new breed of pharmacists to be well equipped with knowledge about Chinese medicine and CAM, which include herbal medicines, functional foods, health care products, aromatics, and homeopathic preparations, as they are found to be commonly used by patients together with western medicines. The School of Chinese Medicine of the Faculty will provide support to the teaching of Chinese Medicine.
Patient counseling and communication skills Students will be trained on patient counseling and communication skills to enhance their proficiency in providing primary health care services, including patient education.
Problem-based learning approach PBL will be adopted for some of the courses to encourage interdisciplinary inquiry and foster life-long learning skills.
Core and options approach The curriculum will provide pharmacy elective courses so that students can develop a more extensive background in their area of special interest and will be well-prepared for their careers.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
