Welcome!
First
of all, we very much welcome applications from students abroad,
and from those whose nationalities span the world. We are intent
on continuing to make HKU even more internationalized than it presently
is, for many reasons, amongst which are to ensure that our student
body is selected from the best around the world and to provide the
sort of global understanding of different cultures that is desirable,
perhaps necessary, for graduates in this century. We currently have
over 6,500 students at HKU whose nationality is outside Hong Kong (we have a full-time student
body of 22,000), and these are currently from nearly 80 different
countries!
"Non-JUPAS"
As
a potential international student, you would apply to HKU through
what is called our "non-JUPAS" system. Strictly speaking,
this is for ANY student who is not applying to HKU on the basis
for their Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination results (if you are,
you will be applying through the JUPAS system). If you are a student
at one of the other universities in Hong Kong, and you wish to transfer
to HKU, you should also apply using the non-JUPAS system. Other
sections under this "Application Process" heading may
therefore direct you to the non-JUPAS section of the website. There
is information under this section of the website to help you to
understand the process of application, but it is reasonably simple!
Deadlines
The deadline for receipt of on-time applications for 2009 admission has now passed. You can still make a late application, but because of the very limited places available for late admissions (at most 5% of the student places of each programme), our undergraduate programmes might only be able to consider those applicants who have exceptional circumstances and/or exceptionally outstanding results. This applies especially if the applications arrive very late. In the case of the M.B.B.S. and B.Pharm. programmes, NO late applications will be considered.
Interviews
and tests
In
considering an application for admission, the faculties concerned
may invite a candidate to attend interviews or tests during the
period February to August or to send in additional information.
In view of the large number of applicants, it is not possible for
a faculty to interview all those who indicate a preference for that
faculty. Candidates should not therefore assume that their application
has been unsuccessful at any stage during the selection exercise
before they are formally notified of the decision on their application.
Scholarships
There
are many scholarships available to HKU students. There are literally
hundreds of scholarships available to good
students ALREADY at the University, usually depending on their
academic performance after first or second year exams or sometimes
based on other non-academic activities. However, in addition to
these, there are now numerous ENTRANCE scholarships, which may provide
support to cover some or all of your tuition or even in some cases
living costs for all your years at HKU. Information about these
is provided at the briefing sessions and open houses. They are nearly
always based on academic merit. For international students, the
entrance scholarship application form can be downloaded from here.
Next
steps
The
next step is to find out more information about HKU, and see whether
it fits your interests. The infoirmation provided on this website
(under "International students" on the left hand side
of the webpage) should help. Once you have done this, and are keen
to apply, go to the webpage for applications by clicking here.
