In addition to excellence in teaching, HKU offers the highest standards of research. HKU spends hundreds of millions of HK$ on equipment for its laboratories, research and teaching, which is one of the indicators showing that the University commits to boost its academic and research achievements. Its staff have always had great success in the recent years' round of research grant awards from the Hong Kong Government, each year successfully obtaining more research money and having more successful research project bids than any other university. Altogether there are more than 4,000 research projects underway in the University at the moment, funded from various sources amounting to billions of HK$. HKU has also been very successful in bids for funding from the China Government. HKU's achievements in research ensure that its teachers can keep you up-to-date with the latest knowledge in all disciplines. The research on infectious diseases is, since it came to the fore during SARS, now acknowledged as of world-class quality

The University has a large population of postgraduate students, studying for research (MPhil and PhD) degrees as well as taught Master's degrees. HKU provides excellent facilities and support to those students wishing to proceed to higher education after completion of their Bachelor's degree. All research students are provided with financial support to cover the costs of their tuition fee and more.
