Where did the 1996 Animal & Plant Biotechnology graduates go?

I.Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Animal & Plant Biotechnology majors : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Altogether 55 persons graduated from the University with a B.Sc. degree in Animal & Plant Biotechnology. Among them, 42 (76%) responded to the survey. Most (74% or 31) of the Animal & Plant Biotechnology graduates were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. Another 24% (or 10 graduates) went on for further studies. No one was unemployed. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

50% (or 5 graduates) took up postgraduate studies in the same discipline as their first degree. All of them (or 10 graduates) studied in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the academic programmes Animal & Plant Biotechnology graduates were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance for further studies.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 72% (21 graduates) secured their first job offer before the end of September. Figure 1 shows the time taken by Animal & Plant Biotechnology graduates to secure employment. In general, the 1996 graduates were faster in securing employment than their 1995 predecessors.

V. Employment Sectors

87% (or 26) of the Animal & Plant Biotechnology graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by education (2 graduates or 6.7%). 3.3% (or 1 graduate) each joined the civil service and community, social & personal services. Figure 3 shows the employment sectors by sex.

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

Table 4 shows the basic salary & gross income that 1996 Animal & Plant Biotechnology graduates received.

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

48% (or 15) of the graduates in full-time employment had two or more job offers. 26% reported having three to five job offers. (Figure 4).
