Where did the 1996 B.Sc. (Computer Science) graduates go?

I.Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about B.Sc. (Computer Science) majors : -

II.Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 60 B.Sc (Computer Science) graduates, 43 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 72%. Of these, 93% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. The remaining 7% took up further studies. (Table 1)

III.Further Studies

Of the 3 graduates who pursued further studies, 2 were enrolled in local tertiary institutions and 1 went to the USA. Table 2 shows the academic programmes pursued by the graduates and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV.Time Taken to Secure Employment

All the graduates were able to secure employment before the end of September 1996. (Figure 1)

V.Employment Sectors

93% of B.Sc. (Computer Science) graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 5% in civil service. Only one graduate (2.5%) joined the education sector (Figure 2).

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

In general , the average income of 1996 B.Sc. (Computer Science) graduates was more than that of their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

78% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. In fact, 50% reported having received three or more job offers (Figure 4). On average, each graduate received 2.5 job offers, compared with 2.4 last year.

VIII.Names of employers and job titles

Of 40 B.Sc. (Computer Science) graduates in full-time employment, 78% were employed as system analysts or computer programmers. Their job titles and the names of their employers are listed below.
