The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) graduates : -
Out of 535 B.A. graduates, 462 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 86%. Of these, 85% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 9% went on for further studies. 5.2% were still seeking full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

Of those who pursued further studies, 15% (or 6 graduates) went abroad, to the U.K., U.S.A. and Japan. Table 2 shows the academic programmes B.A. graduates were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance for their studies.

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 93% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of December. In general, the 1996 B.A. graduates less time to secure employment than their predecessors in the previours year (Figure 1).

64% of the 1996 B.A. graduates who were in full-time employment were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 25% in education, 7.6% in civil service and 3.3% in the community, social and personal services sector. (Figure 2)

Table 4 shows the basic salary and gross income received by the 1996 B.A graduates. On the whole, they received a lower income than their predeceesors in the previous year.

Of those in full-time employment, 67% had more than one offer. 37% reported having received three or more job offers (Figure 4). On average, each graduate received 2.5 job offers, compared with 2.1 last year.

Of the B.A. graduates who were in full-time employment, 39% worked as business professionals*, 24% as teachers and 9.9% as authors, journalists and related writers. Their job titiles and the names of their employers are listed below.
