The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about B.Sc. graduates : -
Out of 561 B.Sc. gaduates, 420 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 75%. Of these, 72% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 3.4% were still seeking full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. 23% went on for further studies, compared with 19% in 1995. Indeed, BSc. is the curriculm after LL.B. with the highest percentage of graduates going on for further studies in 1996. (Table 1)

Of the 97 graduates who pursued further studies, 4 went to the U.K. The rest studied in local tertiary institutions. 80% chose to pursue a M.Phil. programme, 3% (or 3) went straight into a Ph.D. programme. Table 2 shows the academic programmes the graduates were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 79% secured their first job offer before the end of September. by December, the percentage increased to 99%. Compared with last year, B.Sc. graduates, on average, took less time to secure employment (Figure 1).

73% of the B.Sc. graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 16% in education. 5.7% joined the community, social and personal services sector and 4.7% joined the civil service. Compared with female graduates, there was a higher percentage of male graduates joining commerce and industry (80% vs. 67%). On the other hand, female graduates were more likely to work in the education sector (21% vs. 11%). (Figures 2 & 3).

In general, the average income of 1996 B. Sc. graduates was more or less the same as their pedecessors in the previous year (Table 4).

52% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 27% reported having received three or more offers (Figure 4). On average, each graduate received 2.0 job offers, compared with 1.9 job offers last year.

Of the B.Sc. graduates who were in full-time employment, 46% worked as business professionals*, and 23% were engaged in science-related occupations, e.g. chemists, environmental officers, computer programmers etc. 14% became teachers.
