Where did the 1996 B.Eng.-Electrical & Electronic Graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates: -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 104 Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates, 84 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 81%. Of these, 92% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 6% went on for further studies. 2.4% (or 2 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Of those who pursued further studies, 3 were enrolled in local tertiary institutions and 2 went to the U.S.A. Table 2 shows the academic programmes they were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 96% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 100% by the end of November. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

92% of the 1996 Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates were employed in commerce & industry, followed by 5.2% in the civil service and 2.6% in the education sector. (Figure 3.)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1996 Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

70% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 40% reported having received three to eight or more job offers (Figure 4). On average, each graduate received 2.6 job offers, compared with 2.2 last year.

VIII. Names of employers and job titles

Of the 77 graduates in full-time employment, 68% worked as engineers, and 17% as system analysts and computer programmers. Their job titles and the names of their employers are listed below.
