Where did the 1996 B.Eng. - Industrial & Manufacturing Systems graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering majors : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 78 Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering graduates, 61 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 78%. Of these, 92% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 1.6% (or 1 graduate) went on for further studies. 6.6% (or 4 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

The only graduate who pursued further studies was enrolled on a M.Phil. programme.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

93% of the graduates who were in full-time employment secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure reached 98% by the end of December 1996. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

Most (98%) of the 1996 graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 1.8% in the community, social & personal services sector (Figure2). Figure 3 shows the employment sectors in which 1996 graduates were employed by gender.

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

On average, the income received by 1996 graduates was more or less the same as their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

80% of the graduates in full time employment had more than one job offer. 30% reported having four or more job offers (Figure 4). On average, each graduate received 3.0 job offers, compared with 2.5 last year.

Of the 56 Industrial & Manufacturing Systems graduates in full time employment, 68% were employed in engineering positions. 23% worked as business professionals*. Their job titles and the names of their employers are listed below.
