Where did the 1996 B.Eng. - Mechanical graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Mechanical Engineering graduates : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 115 Mechanical Engineering graduates, 98 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 85%. Of these, 89% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 9.2% took up further studies. 2 persons (2%) were still seeking full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Compared with 1995, there were more graduates going on for further studies (9% vs. 4%). Table 2 shows the academic programmes pursued and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 99% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure reached 100% by the end of October. Compared with their predecessors in 1995, the 1996 graduates, on average, took shorter time to secure employment.(Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

94% of the Mechanical Engineering graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 6% in civil service (Figure2)(Figure3).

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1996 Mechanical Engineering graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

71% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 44% reported having received three or more job offers (Figure 4). On average, each graduate received 2.7 job offers, compared with 2.3 last year.
