Where did the 1996 Geography & Geology graduates go?

I.Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Geography & Geology majors : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Of the 59 respondents who reported to major in Geography & Geology, 52 graduates (88%) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. Two (3.4%) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996 and 5 (8.5%) pursued further studies. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

All of 5 graduates who went on for further studies were enrolled in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the programmes of study pursued, and Table 3 shows the source of finance for further studies. (Table 3)

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Of the 52 graduates who were in full-time employment, 50 (96%) secured their first job offers before the end of September. The figure reached 100% in October. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

64% (or 33) of the Geography & Geology graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 27% (or 14 graduates) in education. 5.8% (or 3 graduates) joined the civil service and 3.8% (or 2 graduates) worked in community, social & personal services (Figure 2).

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The average income of the 1996 Geography & Geology graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of the 52 Geography & Geology graduates in full-time employment, 33 (or 63%) reported having received more than one job offer. (Figure 4).
