The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Japanese Studies majors : -
Of the 71 respondents who reported to major in Japanese Studies, 64 graduates (90%) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. Four of the graduates (6%) went on for further studies. The remaining 2 graduates (3%) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996 (Table 1).

The percentage of Japanese Studies graduates who took up further studies decreased to 6% from 21% last year. Table 2 shows the academic programmes enrolled, and Table 3 shows the source of finance for further studies.

94% of the 1996 graduates secured their first job offers before the end of September. The percentage increased to 98% in December. (Figure 1)

Commerce and industry was the largest employment sector, taking 94% (60) of the Japanese Studies graduates. Education and community, social and personal services each took 2% (or 1 graduate). Two graduates (3%) were employed by Government. (Figure 3).

Of the 64 graduates in full-time employment, 42 (or 66%) obtained more than one job offer. 38% (or 24 graduates) in fact reported having received three or more offers (Figure 3).
