Where did the 1996 Translation graduates go?

I.Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Translation majors : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Of the 46 respondents who reported to major in Translation, 43 graduates (94%) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. Three graduates (7%) went on for further studies. No unemployment was reported. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

The percentage of Translation graduates who pursued further studies increased to 6.5% from last year’s 2.4%. All of them (3 graduates) studied in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the programme of study engaged by the graduates, and Table 3 shows the source of finance for further studies.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Of the 43 graduates in full-time employment, 37 (88%) secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 100% after December. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

54% (or 23) of the 1996 graduates were employed in commerce and industry. 19% (or 8 graduates) each joined the civil service and the education sector. 9.3% or 4 graduates joined community, social and personal services. (Figure 2.)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1996 Translation graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of the 43 Translation graduates in full-time employment, 30 (or 70%) had more than one job offer. (Figure 4).
