Where did the 1997 Chinese graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Chinese majors : -

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Of the 71 respondents who reported to major in Chinese, 76% (or 54 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 5.6% (or 4 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. 17% (or 12 graduates) went on for further studies. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Ten graduates who pursued postgraduate studies were enrolled in local tertiary institutions. Of these, four graduates took up a M.Phil. programme in Arts and one graduate took up a postgraduate certificate programme in education. (Tables 2 & 3)

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 89% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of December. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

65% (or 35 graduates) of the Chinese graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 32% (or 17 graduates) in the education sector. 1.9% (or 1 graduate) each joined the civil service and the community, social & personal services. (Figures 2 & 3)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

In general, the average income of the 1997 Chinese graduates was a little higher than that of their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of those in full-time employment, 70% of the graduates had more than one job offer. 32% reported having received three or more job offers. (Figure 4)
