Where did the 1997 B. Eng. - Civil & Structural graduates go?

 

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Civil & Structural Engineering graduates : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Out of 101 Civil & Structural Engineering graduates, 86 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 85%. Of these, 95% (or 82 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 3.5% (or 3 graduates) pursued further studies and 1.2% (or 1 graduates) was not seeking for full-time job. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Two graduates pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as their first degree and were enrolled in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the academic programme they were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 95% secured their first job offer before the end of August. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of September. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

70% (or 57 graduates) of the 1997 Civil & Structural Engineering graduates were employed in commerce & industry. The remaining 30% (or 25 graduates) joined the civil service. (Figures 2 & 3)

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

68% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 48% reported having received three to eight or more job offers. Compared with 3.1 job offers last year, each Civil & Structural Engineering graduate on average received 2.4 job offers. (Figure 4).
