Where did the 1997 B. Eng. - Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates go?

 

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates: -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Out of 94 Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates, 87 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 93%. Of these, 87% (or 76 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 12% (or 10 graduates) went on for further studies. 1.1% (or 1 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Seven graduates pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as their first degree and one graduate studied science. Eight graduates were enrolled in local tertiary institutions and one graduate went to the U.S.A. Table 2 shows the academic programmes pursued and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 97% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 100% by the end of October. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

Most (92% or 70 graduates) of the 1997 Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduates were employed in commerce & industry, followed by 5.3% (or 4 graduates) in the civil service and 2.6% (or 2 graduates) in the education sector. (Figures 2 & 3)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

In general, the average income of 1997 Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates was higher than that of their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

62% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 42% reported having received three or more job offers. On average, each graduate received 2.4 job offers. (Figure 4)
