Where did the 1997 Fine Arts graduates go?

 

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Fine Arts majors : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Of the 19 respondents who reported to major in Fine Arts, 53% (or 10 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 21% (or 4 graduates) went on for further studies. 16% (or 3 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Four graduates pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as their first degree. All of them took up a M.Phil. programme in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the academic programme Fine Arts graduates were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates in full-time employment, 90% were able to secure their first job offer before the end of July. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of December. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

Of the Fine Arts graduates in full-time employment, 56% (or 5 graduates) were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 22% (or 2 graduates) in the education sector. The remaining 11% (or 1 graduate) each joined the civil service and the community, social & personal services. (Figure 2)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1997 Fine Arts graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of those in full-time employment, 50% of the graduates had more than one job offer. 40% reported having received three to eight or more job offers. (Figure 4)
