Where did the 1997 Geography & Geology graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Geography & Geology majors : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Of the 47 respondents who reported to major in Geography & Geology, 68% (or 32 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 6.4% (or 3 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. Another 26% (or 12 graduates) went on for further studies. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Of those who went on for further studies, five graduates pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as their first degree. They took up a M.Phil. programme in local tertiary institutions. (Tables 2 & 3)

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those who were in full-time employment, 81% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The percentage increased to 100% after December 1997. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

Most (74% or 23 graduates) of the Geography & Geology graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 19% (or 6 graduates) in the education sector. 3.2% (or 1 graduate) each joined the civil service and the community, social & personal services. (Figures 2 & 3)

Of those in full-time employment, 53% had more than one job offer. 31% reported having received three or more job offers. (Figure 4)
