Where did the 1997 B.Sc. (Sp. & Hear. Sc.) graduates go?

 

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about B.Sc. (Sp. & Hear. Sc.) graduates : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Out of 19 B.Sc. in Speech and Hearing Sciences graduates, 18 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 95%. All of them were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. (Table 1)

III. Time Taken to Secure Employment

94% secured their first job offer before the end of August. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of December. (Figure 1)

IV. Employment Sectors

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, half (50% or 9 graduates) of the graduates were employed in community, social & personal services, followed by 44% (or 8 graduates) in the education sector. The remaining 6% (or 1 graduate) joined the civil service. (Figures 2 & 3)

V. Basic Salary and Gross Income

In general, the average income of 1997 B.Sc. in Speech and Hearing Sciences graduates was higher than that of their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VI. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of those in full-time employment, 50% of the graduates had more than one job offer. 17% reported having received three to five job offers. On average, each graduate received 1.8 job offers. (Figure 4)

VII. Names of employers and Job titles

Most of the B.Sc. in Speech and Hearing Sciences graduates were employed as speech therapists. The job titles of the graduates in full-time employment and the names of their employers are listed below.
