Notice of Ordinary General Meeting 2005

 

 

Members of Convocation are cordially invited to attend the Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) to be held on Friday, June 17, 2005, at 6:30 pm in Convocation Room (Room 218), Main Building, HKU. 

The meeting will be followed by dinner and a speech by Professor LUNG Ying-Tai 龍應台教授, Visiting Professor of Journalism and Media Studies Centre, The University of Hong Kong, on Cultural Positioning of HKU 「人文港大」.   Please register now.

 

 

 

Ordinary General Meeting

 

Order of Business

1.  To confirm the Minutes of the Extraordinary General Meeting held on March 1, 2005.
2.  To receive a report from the Chairman on Convocation issues in the past year.
3.  To discuss questions (if any) from members received by the Clerk of Convocation (Notice of questions to be asked at the meeting must be given to the Clerk of    Convocation no later than June 7, 2005).
4.  To elect members to the Standing Committee.
5.   To endorse a decision taken by the Standing Committee to appoint Dr LEE Kin-Hung (MBBS 1958; MD 1971) and Mr Kenneth SIT (LLB1980; PCLL 1981) to fill   the vacancies on the Standing Committee until August 31, 2006 and August 31, 2005 respectively under Clause 31 of the Convocation Constitution.

Minutes of the Extraordinary General Meeting held on March 1, 2005

 

An Extraordinary General Meeting of Convocation was held on March 1, 2005 at 6:30 pm in the Convocation Room, The University of Hong Kong.

 

33 members of Convocation were present at the meeting.


1. The Meeting CONFIRMED the Minutes of the last Ordinary General Meeting held on May 10, 2004.
2.      The Meeting CONSIDERED and APPROVED by resolution a set of proposed amendments to the Constitution and Rules of Convocation.  The amended Constitution and Rules, as attached, would take effect immediately except as to the positions of the present Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Clerk.
3.   The Meeting WAS ADJOURNED at 7:30 pm.

 

 

Convocation Election 2005

 

 

Election of Members to the Standing Committee

 

In accordance with the Constitution and Rules of Convocation, nominations were invited in the notice of election issued on Convocation website, the Convocation Newsletter and in Ming Pao and South China Morning Post for the election of eight members to the Standing Committee.

 

By the published closing time: 12:00 noon, May 26, 2005, the following nominations have been received:

NOTES ON PROXY FORM

 

1.      In accordance with the Convocation Constitution and Rules, in matters where decisions by voting are required, votes may be given either personally or by proxy.  Proxy form shall be obtained from the Convocation Secretariat, c/o Development & Alumni Affairs Office or downloaded from the Convocation website.  If you are going to vote personally at the OGM, please do not appoint any proxy.

 

1.      Each Convocation member is entitled to appoint the chairman of the Ordinary General Meeting as proxy to vote on his/her behalf at the OGM. 

 

2.      The instrument appointing a proxy shall be in writing under the hand of the Appointor.

 

3.      To be valid, each proxy form must be duly signed, completed, and deposited with the Clerk of Convocation not less than 72 hours prior to the time for holding the OGM i.e., no later than 6:30 pm, June 14, 2005 via the Convocation Secretariat, c/o Development & Alumni Affairs Office, 9/F, Knowles Building, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong, during office hours (9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday and 9:00 am – 12:30 pm, Saturday; and 9:00 am – 6:30 pm on June 14, 2005 ).

 

5.   Proxy forms, whether original or photocopied, shall be clearly completed with the required information and each form shall bear the original signature of the Appointor.  Any such document sent to the Secretariat by fax or email shall not be accepted.  The Clerk shall have the final discretion on the validity of such document.

 

6.     The following shall be a spoiled proxy form:

(a)        a proxy form received after the closing time (i.e. after 6:30 pm, June 14, 2005);

(b)        a proxy form received torn;

(c)        a fax or email copy of proxy form received;

(d)        a proxy form not duly signed or not bearing the original signature of the Appointor;

(e)        more than one proxy received from the same Appointor;

(f)          any parts of the form to which authenticity relates is incomplete or inaccurate.

 

7.      The record of the Development & Alumni Affairs Office shall be conclusive as to the receipt of proxy forms.

Attained a B.A. degree (Psychology and History) in 1969 and a Post-graduate Diploma in Education in 1971 in HKU. Taught in senior forms in secondary schools for eight years. Joined the business sector afterwards and occupied senior management posts in various corporations. Took up the post of General Education Coordinator in the General Education Unit, HKU in March, 2001 – December, 2002. Became Shenzhen Learning Centre Manager, School of Continuing Education, Hong Kong Baptist University in December, 2002 – December, 2004. President of Hong Kong University Graduates Association for four terms in the period of 1984 – 1990.  A Founding Member and ex-Member of the Executive Committee of Hong Kong University Graduates Association Education Foundation.  Elected member of the Standing Committee, HKU Convocation in September, 2001 – August 31, 2004. Senior Retail Development Manager

 

Ms Leong has been in the property and retail marketing and development business for over 15 years.  She is a specialist in the retail property development and management business and has extensive experience in the international travel retail and tourism trades.  She has served the Airport Authority Hong Kong since airport inception and is a founding member of the Hong Kong SkyMart.

 

Ms Leong currently leads and overlooks the retail development and management of MTR Corporation Limited’s developing flagship retail property at Union Square Hong Kong as well as other new retail property developments of the MTRCL.  Union Square is the largest mixed use development in Hong Kong and the region.

Brief Biography:

 

MAN Cheuk Fei graduated from the Department of Chinese, University of Hong Kong in 1987. In 1986, he was popularly elected to serve as the Vice-President (Internal Affair) of HKU Students’ Union, which entailed a one-year academic deferment, and has actively served the university since. From 1988 to 1991, he was Tutor of Old Halls.

 

From 1990 he started his journalistic career. He first joined Next Magazine as Reporter/Writer in political news. Later he became the founding Editor-in-Chief of Teacher Plus monthly. In 1992 he joined Hong Kong Economic Journal to serve as Editor/Writer of the Commentary section. In 2000, he was promoted to Assistant Chief Editor.

 

In 1999 Mr. Man obtained his Master of Philosophy degree from the Department of Government & Public Administration, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2000, he was granted both a Knight Fellowship from Stanford University, as well as a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University. He finally decided upon spending a year at Stanford.

 

When he returned from the US in 2001, he resumed his position with Hong Kong Economic Journal and also became Chief Editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly from 2002 onwards.

Brief Biography:

 

TONG Chun Wan obtained two degrees in architecture from HKU in 1975 and 1977 respectively.

 

Since graduation, he has been practicing as a professional architect and a real estate administrator.

 

He is a registered architect with the Architect Registration Board of Hong Kong, fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Real Estate Administration.  He is currently a member of the Authorized Persons Registration Committee (APRC) and member of the APRC Panel, member of the Land and Building Advisory Committee (LBAC) of the HKSAR Government, and member of the Building Sub-Committee established thereunder.  He is also a member of the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong, and currently the President of the Hong Kong Institute of Real Estate Administration.

 

In the past 15 years, he participated in many voluntary works in HKU, and is currently member of the Court, the Deputy Chairman of HKU Convocation, and member of Faculty Advisory Board in the Faculty of Architecture.

 

He is at present an Assistant Director of Great Eagle Holdings Limited, and the Managing Director of the Great Eagle Development and Project Management Limited.

Brief Biography:

 

Mr Tsang was graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1973 with a Bachelor Degree in Science (Engineering).

 

He is currently the business director of a consulting firm on Data Network, data centres and mobile data communication.  He is the chief consultant on the Data Centre project of China Mobile Communication Company, Guang Dung branch.

 

He has over twenty years business experience in China.  In the last twenty years, Mr Tsang held senior positions in several listed companies including Sun Hung Kai & Co, Tian An (China) Ltd and Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Ltd.

 

He is also active in University affairs and holds the following posts:

Brief Biography:

 

Wan Chung On, John also known as John Wan graduated in 1970 and promptly joined the Hong Kong Government until his retirement in April 2003.  His last job was an Associate Director of Invest Hong Kong.

 

He has been active in voluntary and community service, having been a Council Member of Wah Yan (HK) Past Students Association since 1990, served as the Association’s Secretary, Chairman and Eventually President.  He has been a Director of the Tuen Mun Yuk Chi Resource Centre for Mentally Handicapped Children since 1990 and an Honorary Vice President of Hong Kong Girl Guides Association since 2000.

 

His dedication to service is reflected in his extensive voluntary work with the Rotary International (RI).  He joined Rotary in March 1987 and became a club president in 1988.  He was elected Governor of RI District 3450 for 2000-01, District 3450 comprising Hong Kong, Macau and Mongolia.  He has since been appointed to a number of committees and task forces at regional and international level and has represented the RI President to a district conference in Taipei in 2004. He is now the General Secretary of the RI Past Governors Council.

 

He enjoys trailwalking, reading and contract bridge.
