Badminton Competition - September 27, 1998

Badminton Competition 1998.

The Badminton Competition 1998 has been well attended by over 30 members and their families. We were delighted to see new faces who came to support the function for the first time. Since only single matches were played, all competitors, despite their sweating and grunting, gave their best performances and everyone, particularly the younger family members had a most enjoyable afternoon.

Gala Ball - October 30, 1998
We had a Ball.
The Gala Ball co-hosted by the Hong Kong University Alumni Association of New South Wales and the Hong Kong Australia Business Association (HKABA) was successfully held on October 30, 1998 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Double Bay. Among those present, more than 80 members and their friends were from our association.
There were speeches by the chairman of HKABA and ours. That was followed by the speech of the guest of honour, the Hon Michael Egan, MLC, who praised the contributions by the Hong Kong community residing in Australia. A sumptuous dinner was followed by a magic and acrobat show. The highlight of the evening was the lucky draw. Several of our members won the major prizes. Our Vice-Chairman, Mr Anthony Ho, won the Hi-Fi donated by the alumni. Dr Henry Chan, past Chairman, won the $1000 cash prize donated by the Hongkong Bank of Australia. Finally, the grand prize of two airline tickets plus hotel accommodation in Hong Kong was won by none other than our charming Public Officer, Ms Helen Wong. Congratulations to them all.
Dances followed and everybody had a swinging time. We hope more of you can join us next year.

Report on Dinner Talk Held on November 21, 1998
Dinner talk by Dr John Edwards, Chief Economist, HongkongBank of Australia and former Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister on the economy of Australia.

The Dinner talk on GST and the Impact of Asian Financial Crisis on Australia were attended by about 70 members and guests. The guest speaker was Dr John Edwards who is the chief Economist of HongkongBank. He was formerly a senior economic adviser to Treasurer then Prime Minister, Paul Keating.
In his presentation, Dr Edwards gave a macro view of the current financial crisis, its impact on various countries and Australia and a forecast of what may happen in 1999. He was quite positive about the future of the global economy and that of Australia. But he played down the impact of GST to medium and high income earners. His views were supported by facts and figures and illustrated by charts and graphs. The audience was impressed by his simple and analytical approach. It was a very useful update of today's Economics and captured everyone's attention.
