What is U-Vision?
'U-Vision' is network of digital bulletin boards for the University of Hong Kong that was launched on March 8th, 2010. Using wall-mounted TV monitors installed at selective locations across the HKU campus, the U-Vision channel broadcasts visual information on activities and events of the University as well as real-time news. It aims at enhancing internal communications among University members in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way.

The Need for U-Vision
As Hong Kong’s pre-eminent university and a world-class institution, HKU regularly hosts a wide range of activities on campus throughout the year. U-Vision is instrumental in helping to inform both the HKU community and general public about these events. By encouraging people to become more involved on campus, U-Vision also benefits HKU in building a stronger community.

U-Vision Objectives

  • Disseminate and share information among HKU members and campus visitors in an effective way
  • Promote events on the HKU campus
  • Help foster the image of HKU, but this is not its primary purpose
  • Help reduce the number of printed posters and banners on campus, but it cannot completely replace them
  • U-Vision TV Locations
Our TV monitors are located both indoors and semi-outdoors across the University. The locations were chosen based on their potential to reach viewers, offering high pedestrian traffic with the minimum disruption to those passing by. Click here to see our locations.

    Working Group Members
The working group members involved in overseeing U-Vision are the Communications and Public Affairs Office, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students, the Computer Centre, the Estates Office, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Students' Union.

    Faculty, Staff, and Student Involvement
Your contribution to U-Vision is essential! Since our goal is to facilitate the sharing of events, we need faculties/departments, staff, and students to help submit the content that they would like to share with the HKU community. To create smooth and efficient communications, U-Vision suggests appointing representatives from the faculties, departments, and Student Union to hold U-Vision submission accounts.

    Multimedia Approach
U-Vision displays videos, static images, and scrolling text.

    Rotating Programme Schedules
The broadcast schedule will be divided into 30 minute long programmes that are repeated. The 30 minute programmes consist of short clips ranging from 20s to 5 min. Certain time slots will be reserved for news broadcasts. Longer broadcasts will be reserved for covering live events. The majority of U-Vision TV monitors will be active for around 10 hours each day, from 9am to 7pm.

    U-Vision & Campus TV Relationship
Campus TV has been involved in developing U-Vision and helping it transition from concept to reality. Its members have provided invaluable input from their experience with a campus broadcasting system. Since Campus TV would like to retain full creative autonomy on their broadcasted content, both Campus TV and U-Vision agreed that the best solution was for Campus TV to maintain their current broadcasting system independent of U-Vision. This will allow Campus TV to continue to fully showcase the creative media talents of students, while still being able to submit content to U-Vision.

    Environmental Awareness
Sustainability is a major focus at HKU. Part of the motivations for starting U-Vision was an effort to reduce paper waste from printed posters and banners on campus. U-Vision will also pursue energy-saving practices. The TV monitors will only increase HKU’s total electricity consumption by approximately 0.04% in reference to 2005 and 2006 figures. (Excluding the larger LED monitors, HKU's total electricity consumption will only be increased by approximately 0.01%.)

    Consultation Meetings
To enable HKU members to better understand the system and its purpose and to contribute to the idea generation process, there have been public consultation meetings and workshops ongoing for various HKU members.
