The HKU 'mature students' admission scheme enables applicants who are aged 25 years or above and who do not possess the required entrance qualifications to be admitted as undergraduate students.
Elders who join the University through this scheme will be regarded as regular University undergraduate students and will undertake their studies in exactly the same manner as other HKU students.
There will be a selection process to make sure that the elders who wish to join the University have the necessary learning skills to enable them to successfully complete the degree programme and benefit from their studies.
For details, please refer to the 'Non-JUPAS Entrance Requirement' page at: http://www.hku.hk/admission/nonjupas-uer.htm#mature
Elders who do not wish to follow a full degree study programme may consider applying for admission as a visiting student.
Visiting students can attend courses and participate in the prescribed coursework for one semester or one year of study in a degree, diploma or other University curriculum. They can also request to take the degree examinations if they so wish. A certificate of attendance and/or a transcript of academic record will be issued on request.
There will be a selection process to make sure that the elders who wish to join the University have the necessary learning skills to enable them to successfully complete the courses and benefit from their studies.
The University has made special arrangement so that visiting students who are elders (i.e. 60 or above) will need to pay only half of the normal tuition fee.
For details and application procedures, please refer to the 'Visiting Students' page at: http://www.hku.hk/admission/visiting.htm
Under this scheme, the elders can join various undergraduate courses without registering first as Visiting Students and paying the regular Visiting Students fees.
The University will produce a list of courses and the number of places available for the elders before the start of each semester. Please click here to view the courses available.
Elders who wish to join the courses are expected to have the necessary learning skills to enable them to benefit from the course.
A nominal fee of $500 will be charged for each course. To use the University Libraries for their studies, elders could apply for a reader's card ($35 to cover the cost of the card) or a borrower's card ($200/year). Elders on these courses are normally not expected to take any examination or other form of assessment. If they however wish to be assessed, they need to seek special permission and pay an examination fee of $250 per course.
