Programme
focus
The MA in English Studies offers
candidates the opportunity to explore recent developments
in the study of literature, culture and socio-linguistics.
English literature and language, once considered
rooted in, and expressive of, mono-cultures centred
in Britain (North America, Australia, etc.), must
now speak across national boundaries and express
transnational cultures. The ‘English-speaking
world’ is a problematic term as English is stretched
across diverse cultures and sub-cultures emerging
from postcoloniality, diaspora, globalization
and new cosmopolitanism. Categories such as World
English and World Literature are problematic,
but the worldliness of English language and literature
must be addressed.
Hong
Kong’s unique historical and geo-political situation
is exploited as a way of seeing into this diversity,
with each course unit designed to give students
the opportunity to reflect on cultural theory
and practice from a Hong Kong perspective.
Designed
for …
education professionals, researchers,
and those seeking academic careers or intellectual
challenge.
