Abstract:
In this presentation, Dr Terry Hannan will describe concepts and experiences in electronic decision support systems from the early 1980's to 2000 and the benefits which emerged from the application of knowledge management. He will finish by examining the concept of “biomedical informatics” as described by Shortliffe, including the importance of standardized data capture and the costs of acquiring research data for epidemiological studies.
Bio-sketch:
Dr Hannan is currently President of the Australian College of Health Informatics, a Fellow of the American College of Health Informatics and was recently Director of Physician Training at Launceston General Hospital, Tasmania. He has held many advisory and consultant posts in health informatics in Australia as well as being an Advisor to the World Health Organization Knowledge Management Committee on IT implementations for Africa and Developing countries. Recently, he co-founded with Indiana University, USA the Mosoriot and AMPATH Electronic Medical Record projects in Kenya [http://openmrs.org/wiki/OpenMRS].
