Abstract:
Home-based cardiac rehabilitation offers an alternative to traditional, hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation.  The aim of this study - a poragmatic randomized controlled trial with patient preference arms - was to compare the clinical effectiveness of both approaches after myocardial infarction and to determine whether patient choice affects clinical outcomes.  Of the 230 patients who agreed to participate, 104 consented to randomization and 126 chose their rehabilitation programme.  At follow-up (nine months) no difference was seen in depression, anxiety, quality of life or cholesterol between the home and hospital-based groups, nor between the preference groups.  It was concluded that home-based cardiac rehabilitation was as effective as hospital-based rehabilitation for patients after myocardial infarction.
