Institute of Chinese Historical Geography was founded in June 1982, and designated a national key institute by the Ministry of Education of China in 1987. The institute is among the first group entitled to grant master degree and doctoral degree, and began to receive postdoctoral researchers in 1996. The institute has taken on the historical geography research program of the national ¡°211-project¡± since 1997.

Introduction to the Research and Teaching Work
Institute of Chinese Historical Geography now consists of Chinese historical political geography research section, Chinese historical economic geography research section, Chinese historical physical geography research section, Chinese historical population geography research section, Chinese historical cultural geography research section, reference section and computer section. There are 18 researchers and 3 assistants, including 6 professors, 6 associate professors, 7 lecturers, among whom 11 hold doctoral degrees.
Institute of Chinese Historical Geography is to do basic research in historical geography, do national key projects research, and train students for master degree and doctoral degree. Our major purpose is to build a Chinese historical geography discipline of international level, and develop the institute into a leading historical geography research institute, which can also function as a database, counseling, and training center.
Institute of Chinese Historical Geography now opens 6 basic courses, 16 degree courses, and 14 selective courses for graduate students, 8 basic courses and 11 selective courses for Ph.D. candidates.
By the end of 1997, Institute of Chinese Historical Geography had trained 39 graduate students, including 15 doctors and 24 masters. The institute produced the first two doctors in liberal arts in 1983. Now the institute is training 22 students, including 14 students for doctoral degree and 8 students for master degree. Besides, there are 3 postdoctoral researchers. So far, the institute has taken 8 National Natural Science Fund projects, 4 National Social Science Fund projects, 2 other national key projects, and 16 major projects. The institute has turned out 76 books, and 335 academic treatises were published during the period of 1992-1997. We have compiled and published 2 volumes of Historical Geography Research (Fudan University Press) and 14 collections of Historical Geography (Shanghai People¡¯s Publishing House)

Zou Yilin male, born in 1935, graduating from Historical Department of Shandong University in 1956. Professor, Ph.D. Supervisor, Chief Professor of Fudan University, Member of School Academic Committee, Director of Historical Geography Committee under Geography Society of China, Member of Discipline Appraisal Group of State Council Degree Committee, Chinese Outstanding Middle-aged Expert, and Director of Chinese Local Records Advisory Group. Main research fields: historical economic geography and history of the Huanghe River. Major publications: Outline of Chinese Historical Geography, The Huanghe River in the Past, Historical Geography of the Huang-huai-hai Plain (chief editor).
Zhang Xiugui male, born in 1935, graduating from Geography Department of East China Normal University in 1959. Professor, Ph.D. Supervisor, Member of Executive Board of Geography Society of China, Vice-director of Historical Geography Committee under Geography Society of China, and Member of Executive Board of Geography Society of Shanghai. Main research fields: historical physical geography, and ancient map study. Major papers: The Evolution of the Riverbed from Yichang to Chenglinji of the Changjiang River and Its Influence--A Background Study of the Three-gorge Project, The Change of the Coastline of Jinshanwei and the Nearby Region.
Zhou Zhenhe male, born in 1941, graduating from Mining and Metallurgy Department of Fuzhou University in 1963, obtaining MA in History in 1981 and Ph.D. in 1983 from Fudan University. Professor, Ph.D., Supervisor, Member of Executive Board of Chinese Administrative Regionalization Society, Member of Executive Board of Overseas Communication History Society of China, and Member of Historical Geography Committee under Geography Society of China. Major research fields: historical political geography, historical cultural geography, history of administrative regionalization of China, and history of social culture. Major publications: Political Geography of the Western Han Dynasty, Dialects and Chinese Culture (co-author), History of Administrative Regionalization of China Seen in A New Light, Study on Chinese Historical Cultural Areas (chief author), Three Geographical Books by Wang Shixing (compiler), An Endless Journey (a selection of essays). Qian Linshu male, born in 1941, graduating from History Department of Fudan University in 1965. Professor, and Vice-director. Major research fields: Chinese historical geography and historical geography of the Qin Dynasty. Zheng Baoheng male, born in 1941, graduating from History Department of Fudan University in 1962. Associate Research Fellow. Major research fields: historical administrative geography, history of the Republic of China. Major papers: The Change of the City of Lianyungang, The Change of Yuegang.
Ge Jianxiong male, born in 1945, obtaining MA in History in 1981 and Ph.D. in 1983 from Fudan University. Professor, Ph.D. Supervisor, Member of CIDH (International Historical Demography Committee), Vice-president of Chinese Society of the History of Qin and Han Dynasties, Member of Executive Board of History Society of China, Member of Executive Board of Chinese History Society of Science and Technology, and Chinese Outstanding Doctor.
