It is committed, through the application of life, physical, and chemical sciences, to develop Hong Kong into a biomedical capital of Asia, and through the strengths of evidence-based Western and Chinese medicine, to develop a one-nation medicine for China and a one-world medicine for humankind. Its department of "Microbiology" has tracked down and identified numerous pathogens responsible for locally-emerging infectious diseases, including influenza viruses and the SARS coronavirus.
