Founded in 1910, the University of Hong Kong is the oldest tertiary education faculty in the Special Administrative Region and is internationally reknown for its research quality and excellence.

For over a century, the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine has been at the forefront of medical research. The Faculty is committed to the advancement of research, learning and teaching in the art and science of medicine and health, to the development of leadership, to the promotion of humanity, and through the pursuit of these goals, to the development of Hong Kong into a premier healthcare centre for the global community. It is committed, through the application of life, physical, and chemical sciences, to develop Hong Kong into a biomedical capital of Asia, and through the strengths of evidence-based Western and Chinese medicine, to develop a one-nation medicine for China and a one-world medicine for humankind. Its department of "Microbiology" has tracked down and identified numerous pathogens responsible for locally-emerging infectious diseases, including influenza viruses and the SARS coronavirus.
