Institut Pasteur is a French non-profit private foundation dedicated to public health worldwide. It is named after Louis Pasteur , its founder and first director who, in 1885 had successfully developed the first vaccine against rabies. It was founded in June 4th, 1887 and inaugurated in November 14th, 1888.

For over a century, the Institut Pasteur has been at the forefront of the battle against infectious disease. This worldwide biomedical research organization based in Paris was first to isolate HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, in 1983. It has a long history of breakthrough discoveries, such as vaccines (diphteria, yellow fever, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B) and identification of several etiologic agents of infectious disease including plague. Since 1908, eight Institut Pasteur scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology.
