The $6,000 question

Dear alumni and friends,

The proposed pay-out of $6,000 announced by the Financial Secretary must have come as a surprise. One would leave the question of whether this is a bonanza or an entitlement to be decided by the Court of Final Appeal or the Standing Committee of the NPC. Not to mention any possible judicial review applications as to who should or should not be paid. But this unprecedented move (a U-turn to be exact) does remind us that even in this rich community, something must be done (by us if not by the wealthy treasury) for those less fortunate than we are.

So, if you have not made up your mind as to how best you can make use of this sum or have not yet committed it to some other worthy cause, why not consider donating it (or any part thereof) to help our Law Faculty in its mission "to train not just first rate legal professionals with the highest calibre and integrity, but also leaders with broad international exposures, vision and commitment to the society"? Why this and not another organization? For a perfectly good reason: if only to enable these future members of the same fraternity to become one day as fortunate and as generous as we are now.

Donations can made by cheques payable to "HKU Law Alumni Charity Limited" and sent to the Faculty Development Office, Law Faculty, 4/F KK Leung Building, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong or payments or transfers to its account with the Bank of East Asia Ltd, Account No. 514-40-68456-2.? Donations of $100 or above are tax deductible.? Please let the charity company know the name and address for the making out and sending of receipts.

The Executive Committee,
The University of Hong Kong Law Alumni Association
