Simon Young is the Director of the Faculty's Centre for Comparative and Public Law and a practising Hong Kong barrister. He has advised on a number of important constitutional law cases in Hong Kong including cases concerned with radio broadcasting laws, prisoners' right to vote, and covert surveillance by law enforcement. He has also completed many public policy research projects on topics such as the confiscation of proceeds of crime, enactment of security and anti-terrorism laws, public sector disciplinary processes, screening processes for asylum seekers, and laws for electing Hong Kong's legislators and Chief Executive.
Prior to joining the Faculty in 2001, Simon worked in Toronto as appellate counsel in the Crown Law Office-Criminal, Ministry of the Attorney General for Ontario, and before that as Assistant Crown Attorney in Hamilton, Ontario, where he prosecuted various types of offences including sexual assault, domestic assault, fraud and manslaughter.
He teaches criminal law and evidence in the LL.B./J.D. programmes and a LL.M. course on human rights in the criminal process. He is a member of the Hong Kong Law Reform Commission sub-committees on hearsay in criminal proceedings and double jeopardy. He is also a member of the Post-Release Supervision Board.
