Course Aims:

Hong Kong is in an ideal venue for the arbitration and mediation of disputes arising out of international commercial and financial investment in Hong Kong, mainland China and the rest of the Asian region. As a result, the Faculty of Law has introduced a new degree programme - the Master of Laws in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution - with effect from the 2007-8 academic year to equip professionals with the necessary knowledge, skills and expertise in various dispute resolution methods, including negotiation, mediation and arbitration. This new specialized LLM programme is open to both law and non-law graduates and part of a comprehensive arbitration and dispute resolution teaching and research initiative being launched by the Faculty of Law.

Apart from legal professionals, other groups who will benefit from this specialized LLM programme include members of Hong Kong's business and financial community, specialists in the construction and engineering fields, mediation and arbitration practitioners, government officials, legislators in the HKSAR and the Asian region, judges and judicial officers who deal with dispute resolution, and members of international organizations specializing in dispute resolution such as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, Hong Kong Mediation Centre and the Hong Kong Mediation Council.

The programme requires approximately 300 hours of class time. Candidates will be required to complete courses to the value of 8 modules, including four compulsory module for a candidate with a degree in law or seven compulsory modules for a candidate with a degree in a discipline other than law.

Regulations for the Degree of Master of Laws in arbitration and dispute resolution (LLM[arb&DR]) 2011-2012

Entrance Requirements:

1. A degree of Bachelor of Laws with good honours or in another appropriate discipline with good honours and relevant background, experience and professional qualifications or an equivalent qualification; or

2. Having been admitted to the professional practice of law in Hong Kong or in a territory or country other than Hong Kong; or

3. Having obtained either the Common Professional Examination of England and Wales or the Common Professional Examination Certificate of this University with good results, provided that in either case the candidate has also obtained at least a second class honours degree of this University or from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose.

4. Applicants may be required to pass a qualifying examination or submit satisfactory evidence of English proficiency if English is not their first language.
