Introduction: 1st Year Courses

The first year courses are open to all first year BA students, and to non-BA students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.

Students must pass the first year course, LING1001 ‘Introduction to linguistics’, before they are admitted to any second and third year courses in the department.

LING1001 Introduction to Linguistics is a 6 credit introductory course. This course is a prerequisite for all courses taught in the department in the second and third years of study, and a requirement for all students intending to major or minor in linguistics.

LING1002 Language.com is a 3 credit IT-integrated course. Students who take the course can use it to fulfill the university's IT requirement. (Not on offer in 2009-2010).

LING1003 Language, Thought, and Culture is a 6 credit course. It is designed as a complementary course to LING1001. Students intending to major in linguistics are required to take this course.
