What is Human Language Technology (HLT)?
Human Language Technology (HLT) has received much attention in linguistics research in recent years. It does not only involve the production of a certain technology, but also deals with the application and generation of human language in the context of the rapid development of new technologies. Here are two definitions of the concept:
Definition #1 "The field of human language technology covers a broad range of activities with the eventual goal of enabling people to communicate with machines using natural communication skills. Research and development activities include the coding, recognition, interpretation, translation, and generation of language." --- Cole, Ron (1996), Foreword, in Survey of the State of Arts of Human Language Technology.
Definition #2 Human Language Technology (HLT) is an area of study that deals with how human language is processed on information technology products like computers, mobile phones, and other digital devices for various applications such as language learning and (web-based) teaching. (Bodomo 2002)
