Dear participants,

As you are aware, the LFG2001 conference is approaching, and we would like to draw your attention to the following issues:

Pre-conference activities

If you arrive in HK on or before 24th June, we assume that you will participate in our pre-conference activities on the 24th, i.e. HIKING and WINE PARTY.  Please contact the secretariat at lfg2001@hku.hk  if you will NOT participate in either or both of these.

PRE-CONFERENCE HIKE

Date: 24th June 2001 (Sunday)
Meeting time: 8:30 am
Meeting place: 1st floor, Meng Wah Complex, University the Hong Kong

(Please refer to our campus map or the Virtual campus map if you need to find your way to the meeting place)

Please be reminded to bring along a bottle of water. You are also advised to bring along an umbrella or a cap to protect you from sunburn. However, the latest forecast indicates that it will be cloudy.

If it rains heavily, we shall go for a traditional Hong Kong-style yum-cha instead!

WINE PARTY

A few words from the Chair of the Local Organizing committee on pre-conference activities

Dear friends,

As I write this I know many of you are already on your way to Hong Kong, Pearl of the Orient. We cannot wait to receive you! We have already sent out information regarding our HIKING event, which comes off on June 24 at 8.30 am.

On the same day, in the evening at 6pm, we will have an informal WINE PARTY. Actually, this is an excuse to get-together for a pre-dinner sip, register our arrival, pick up our conference packs, catch up with long lost friends and meet new ones. New friends are silver but the old ones are still golden! This event is expected to last one and a half hours (from 6 - 7.30) and will take place in HKU's oldest building - its heart of the matter - fondly dubbed, Main Building. That's where the Department of Linguistics is housed. While sipping some wine we'll show you around our offices.

After the event, people are free to head in any of two directions:

1. Carry your conference bag quietly back into your room and sift through the conference programme, abstract booklet, and other bits of information in your pack,

OR

2. Head off into the environs of HKU or even the city centre, what we Hong Kongers call CENTRAL, to sample off the many pubs and restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong, SOHO, you name them! (Of course, we will not overdo it as we have a full day the next day.)

Once again welcome to Hong Kong and please be on time for both functions on June 24.

Adams Bodomo,
Chair, LOC of LFG2001

Handout

Please be reminded that you should bring along 70 copies of HANDOUT for your talk.

Audio-Visual Requirement

We are making arrangements for Audio-Visual facilities at the conference venue. Please advise if you have not yet stated your AV requirement in your registration form.

Accommodation

If you are overseas participant, please note that the local organizing committee has already sent you a letter of confirmation regarding your ACCOMMODATION arrangements via email or post. Please contact us at lfg2001@hku.hk if you have not yet received such information.

Please provide us with your detailed itinerary (with time/date of arrival and departure). We can then forward the information to your respective hall of residence in order to facilitate a smooth check-in and check-out (especially if you arrive early in the morning or late evening, we have to make sure that somebody is on duty there).

Transportation

From Airport to your respective accommodation:

1. Metered taxis - Taxi fare about HKD400.

2. Airport buses - No. A11 and E11 runs at regular intervals from the airport to Central (Hong Kong Island) costs about HKD40 where taxi are available for the rest of the journey costs about HKD40-50.

Weather in Hong Kong and What to Pack

Summer in Hong Kong is hot and humid with temperature from 26oC-33oC (78oF-91oF) and humidity near 86 per cent. Short sleeves (or even sleeveless T-shirts for outdoor activities!) and cotton clothes work best, with a lightweight sweater for indoors as restaurants tend to set air-conditioning on high.(Source: Hong Kong Tourism Board, 2001)

We suggest that you should also bring an umbrella or a raincoat with you since it is quite likely to rain in HK summer.

If you are interested in going to hike (the Pre-Conference Activity) on June 24, we strongly advise you to bring a bottle of water with you on that day. A hat or cap of some kind may also be uesful.

You can obtain an updated weather report of Hong Kong from the Hong Kong Observatory website [a regularly updated 5-day forecast].

If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact the secretariat at lfg2001@hku.hk.

We are looking forward to meeting you all in Hong Kong soon.
