A few words
from the Chair of the Local Organizing committee on pre-conference activities
Dear friends,
As I write this I know many of you are already on your way to Hong Kong, Pearl of the
Orient. We cannot wait to receive you! We have already sent out information regarding our
HIKING event, which comes off on June 24 at 8.30 am.
On the same day, in the evening at 6pm, we will have an informal WINE PARTY. Actually,
this is an excuse to get-together for a pre-dinner sip, register our arrival, pick up our
conference packs, catch up with long lost friends and meet new ones. New friends are
silver but the old ones are still golden! This event is expected to last one and a half
hours (from 6 - 7.30) and will take place in HKU's oldest building - its heart of the
matter - fondly dubbed, Main Building. That's where the Department of Linguistics is
housed. While sipping some wine we'll show you around our offices.
After the event, people are free to head in any of two directions:
1. Carry your conference bag quietly back into your room and sift through the conference
programme, abstract booklet, and other bits of information in your pack,
OR
2. Head off into the environs of HKU or even the city centre, what we Hong Kongers call
CENTRAL, to sample off the many pubs and restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong, SOHO, you name
them! (Of course, we will not overdo it as we have a full day the next day.)
Once again welcome to Hong Kong and please be on time for both functions on June 24.
Adams Bodomo,
Chair, LOC of LFG2001

a letter of confirmation regarding your ACCOMMODATION arrangements via email or post.
Please contact us at lfg2001@hku.hk if you have not
yet received such information.
|

Please provide
us with your detailed itinerary (with time/date of arrival and departure). We can then
forward the information to your respective hall of residence in order to facilitate a

Weather
in Hong Kong and What to Pack
 |
Summer in Hong
Kong is hot and humid with temperature from 26oC-33oC (78oF-91oF) and humidity near 86 per
cent. Short sleeves (or even sleeveless T-shirts for outdoor activities!) and cotton
clothes work best, with a lightweight sweater for indoors as restaurants tend to set
air-conditioning on high.(Source: Hong Kong Tourism Board, 2001)
|
 |
We suggest
that you should also bring an umbrella or a raincoat with you since it is quite likely to
rain in HK summer.
|
 |
If you are
interested in going to hike (the Pre-Conference Activity) on June 24, we strongly advise
you to bring a bottle of water with you on that day. A hat or cap of some kind may also be
uesful.
|
 |
You can obtain
an updated weather report of Hong Kong from the Hong Kong Observatory website
[a regularly updated 5-day forecast].
|
|
If you need further
information, please do not hesitate to contact the secretariat at lfg2001@hku.hk.
We are looking forward to meeting you all in Hong Kong
soon.
