Music and the Body

Organised by the Department of Music and the Centre for
the Humanities and Medicine, The University of Hong Kong
The theme of this conference is the multidimensional relationship
between music and the body. The conference proposes to reckon
the clashes between the various perspectives and approaches,
and aims to attain a more holistic understanding of the relationship
between music and the body by asking questions that cut across
traditional disciplines. Invited speakers include Sander
Gilman (Emory University/The University of Hong Kong), Eric
Clarke (University of Oxford), Lawrence Zbikowski (University
of Chicago), Martha Feldman (University of Chicago), Atau Tanaka (Newcastle University), and Marina Gilman (Emory Voice Center). We invite
papers in all fields related to the theme.

The goal of the symposium is to interrogate and reflect on various methodologies for investigating the means by which technology transforms members of societies into communities of listening in different locales. The symposium coincides with the residency of leading scholar on popular culture, Andrew F. Jones, who will be the Rayson
Huang Fellow in the Department of Music from 21-26 March 2011. We welcome submissions in all fields dealing with recorded music, senses of hearing, and the acoustemologies of sound cultures.
