Introduction » Message from DOM
It is my pleasure to introduce my team of midwives and nurses in the O&G dept. of Queen Mary Hospital and Tsan Yuk Hospital. We have a highly committed team of nurses and midwives working in the department. Our service changes according to the changes in the health care technology as well as the needs of the women / patients. Provision of high standard patient-centered care is our goal.

The aims of our service provision:
A) Towards midwifery service
- Empower the women to take care of themselves at different stage from pregnancy to postnatal period, and to take care of their newborn via health education, talks, demonstration etc.
- Enhance the women to prepare for their deliveries by advising them to make a birth plan and discuss with the doctors and midwives during the antenatal period.
- Enhance natural birth and advocate the use of non-pharmacological pain relief by the during labour.
- Advocate breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact soon after birth. All babies are rooming-in with the mothers 24 hours a day.
- Assess the woman for emotional problems and providing necessary counseling and referral when indicated.
B) Towards Gynaecology and Gynaecology-oncology nursing service
- Empower the patient on self care via health educated pamphlets.
- Encourage and empower the relatives to take care of the patient at home by providing the necessary information and explanation.
- Provide psychological support to the gynaecology-oncology patient as well as their relatives.
Service provision
A) Midwifery services
- Day Service
To reduce the admission of the woman and to enhance family unity, we establish an antenatal and postnatal day service.
- Antenatal day service: perform OGTT, non-stress test and blood pressure survillance.
- Postnatal day services: provide continuity care to early discharged mother and her newborn baby within 10 days of delivery. Pre-arranged appointment will be given to the mother to attend the service with her baby for assessment of? their physical conditions, the mother・s ability in baby care and self-care. The mother・s emotional condition will also be assessed to detect signs of postnatal depression. Health education, counselling services as well as doctor・s consultation will be provided accordingly.
- Health education
Outpatient: We provide
~ Chinese and English class of antenatal health talks and
~ Breastfeeding talk (provided by Lactation Consultants).
In-patient: We provide
~ Breastfeeding instruction class;
~ Bath demonstration class;
~ Infant feeding and
~
Postnatal discharge advice.
- Early detection of postnatal emotional problems with counseling services
It is not uncommon to see mothers to have emotional problems. In order to help the mothers to get through these problems, we provide early detection and assessment to the mothers postnatally.
- Provision of non-pharmacological pain relief during labour
We have implemented different non-pharmacological pain relief methods including TENS, Birthball, Childbirth massage, music, relaxation exercises etc. Our midwives will assist the women on the use of non-pharmacology pain relief methods to enhance her labour process.
- Breastfeeding Hotline
To enhance and support the mothers in breastfeeding and to help them to solve some immediate breastfeeding problems after discharge, we set up a hotline to our discharged mothers. Our experienced Nursing Officers or Lactation Consultants will answer their questions.
We have also set up a computerized phone system (in Cantonese), through which, we provide answers to the common breastfeeding problems. The public can also gain access to this system to find these answers through telephone (phone no. is 2549 1112).
- Ultrasound scanning
We have experienced and well training Nurse Specialists providing counseling to the pregnant women related to prenatal diagnosis. They also provides dating and routine scan to the pregnant women.
- Bereavement / Counseling services
Bereavement services will be provided to those with fetal loss or fetal abnormalities.
B) Nursing services
- EPAC (Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic)
To reduce unnecessary admission to gynaecology ward, outpatient service for early pregnancy assessment is provided. Necessary investigation, such as ultrasound scan will be arranged and appropriate referral to antenatal clinic or to be admitted to the ward for further assessment will be arranged when indicated.
- Day Chemotherapy
Day chemotherapy service is provided to reduce the patient・s stay in hospital and to enhance them to have better family unity and support as well as better social life in living with the disease.
- Psychosocial care
Nurses in gynae-oncology ward are specially trained by our Clinical Psychologist to provide psychosocial care to the women with gynaecology-oncology diseases. Individual counseling services as well as group counselling services are provided to gynaecology oncology patients and their family members.
