Department of Pathology presents Croucher Advanced Study Institute 2012 Introduction Cancer is the major cause of death in Hong Kong as in most parts of the world. Traditional studies on cancer emphasize on the roles of genetic and epigenetic changes in cancer cells. In recent years, increasing volume of literature identifies the important interaction between tumour cells and the surrounding stroma. Such tumour microenvironment comprises of complicated networking including cellular and non-cellular components and affects crucial signaling pathways factors that control tumour invasion and metastasis, chemoresistance and response to metabolic stress. Understanding of the most advanced breakthroughs and development in this field is of great importance to cancer researchers. It is expected that such knowledge is of utmost importance in developing novel prognostic marker that can better predict outcome of cancer patients as well as innovative therapeutic targets that can overcome chemoresistance and improve survival of our cancer patients. These concepts are included as main themes of the proposed ASI. The lecturers are all well-renowned masters of the field and have contributed to high impact research. It will provide a precious opportunity for researchers from Hong Kong and the region to be enlightened directly and interactively from the masters in the field. The ASI also makes available a valuable platform of scientific networking which facilitates collaborative interactions among the local participants and the masters. Opening Address by Professor Paul K.H. TAM Professor S.P. Lee Professor Annie N.Y. CHEUNG Open Lectures by
Director Annie Nga-Yin CHEUNG Organizing Committee

Croucher Advanced Study Institute An Advanced Study Institute (ASI) is a high-level teaching activity where a carefully defined subject, systematically presented, is treated in depth by lecturers of international standing, and new advances in a subject, not taught elsewhere, are reported in tutorial form. ASIs, as short courses, contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and the formation of international scientific contacts. The teaching in ASIs is aimed at established scientists with substantial scientific background in the topic being proposed.

Department of Pathology jointly present A Seminar “Somatic mutations in human cancer: by Dr. P. Andrew Futreal 1:00 PM, Friday, May 22, 2009 All are welcome Biosketch: Dr. Futreal received his PhD in Pathology from the University of North Carolina in 1993. He then was an Assistant Professor at Duke University in the Departments of Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology and Genetics before moving to the to the UK in 2000 to start the Cancer Genome Project with Mike Stratton and Richard Wooster. He is currently Co-Director of the Cancer Genome Project with Mike Stratton and a Senior Investigator at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. His research background includes work on identification of BRCA1 and BRCA2 as well as investigations into the somatic genetics of breast and gynaecological malignancies. His current research areas are using genome-based approaches to investigate the somatic genetics of human cancer - including high-throughput sequencing and array-based methods. This work has lead to the identification of BRAF as a new human cancer gene, and other progress including identification of ERBB2 mutations in lung cancer, FBXW7 and PTEN mutations in T-cell leukaemia, identification of chemo-resistance mechanisms in glioblastoma and identifying mutations implicating the histone modification machinery in solid tumours. His work also focuses on investigating the translation of basic research findings with a focus on applying somatic cancer genetics to clinical oncology problems. MLT CPD code: 04091121 |

DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY Presents The Inaugural Hou Pao-Chang Distinguished Lecture
All are welcome For further information, please feel free to contact Abstract Multicellular organisms devote many different, genetically-defined pathways to their responses to injury. Some of these are shared by unicellular organisms (e.g. the heat shock, unfolded protein and autophagy responses). Others (including apoptosis) are widely employed by multicellular organisms, in which they also participate in the shaping of tissues and organs in normal development. Deficiency in these pathways carries high biological costs that include cancer, disorders of immunoregulation, and degenerative diseases of the CNS. This lecture focuses on the activation of apoptosis in cells that have been exposed to ionising radiation, a circumstance in which they receive double-strand DNA breaks. It discusses how injury signals are coupled to the apoptosis effector mechanism, how the threshold for activating cell death may be modified, and how, following injury, the death sentence may be repealed by the intra-nuclear particles called PML bodies. Finally, it seeks to indicate the relevance of these cellular reactions to human carcinogenesis. About the speaker Professor Andrew Wyllie graduated from Aberdeen University in Medicine in 1967 and completed his PhD there in 1975 under the supervision of Sir Alastair Currie. It was at this time, with Professor John Kerr from the University of Queensland, that his interest in the processes of cell death began. In 1972 he was co-author of the first paper formally describing the process of apoptosis and much of his research since then has been occupied with the cell and molecular biology of this process and its relevance in cancer. A histopathologist by training, he has worked in the Royal Postgraduate Medical School of London and the University of Edinburgh (where he was Head of Department until 1998), before taking up his present post as Professor of Pathology in the University of Cambridge. His current main research interest is the role of apoptosis in the genesis and treatment of human cancer, and colorectal cancer in particular. Apoptosis is now the focus of intense research in many laboratories worldwide and is the subject of thousands of articles. Wyllie’s contribution has been recognised in international awards including the Bertner Award of the M D Anderson Cancer Center, the Canadian Gairdner Foundation International Award and the Scheele Prize of the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a member of the Academia Europea and the British Academy of Medical Sciences. Throughout his career, and at present, he has been involved in teaching medical and other undergraduates the basic processes that underlie disease. He is married, with three children.
