Admission, scholarships and degree requirements:

Research Postgraduates in Physiology at the Master and Doctorate levels are admitted through applications to the Medical Faculty Higher Degrees Committee. Candidates for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) should conduct research under the structured supervision of at least on staff member of the Department, as well as following an approved coursework component. The closing date for the main round of application for admission is December 31 of every year. Clearing round applications may be invited in the following May and September of the same year if there are places left. The closing dates for these later rounds are May 31 and September 30, respectively. Applicants are therefore advised to apply early. MPhil candidates may commence their studies on either September 1 or January 1 of each year. Successful PhD applicants, however, may commence their candidature on the first day of any calendar month during the academic year. In addition to the basic requirement to complete a research project and thesis with their supervisors, all postgraduate students are required to present at least one research seminar per year. Students whose background does not include an adequate amount of Physiology may also need to complete a course in Physiology. The backgrounds of our students include Physiology, Medicine, Biology, Zoology, Biochemistry, Engineering, Biotechnology, and Dentistry. Students whose first-degree studies were not conducted in English must achieve a score of at least 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test) or 80 (internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or equivalent. The Faculty of Medicine provides an induction programme for all our research postgraduate students, presently covering scientific principles of biomedical research, teaching and communication skills, and biostatistics. Further courses are available through the Graduate School for research postgraduate students.
